For those of you that don’t know it, I am a military physician in addition to being a home business owner and coach. Well, one of the good and not-so-good things about being in the military is that you have to keep up with the weight standards. Yes, for my job, I have to maintain a certain weight or body fat percentage. Now, while I agree overall that it is absolutely imperative that those members of the US armed forces stay in shape, the entire system is a bit out of whack.
For instance, there is a weight limit for each particular height within the US Navy standard. If you weigh more than your allotted weight for your height, then you get taped to assess for body fat percentage. This is where I personally think the system is very old. They measure your waste and then your neck, taking the difference, and then they estimate your body fat percentage on a chart. This does not adequately measure body fat percentage in my mind, but I still have to follow the rules. Finally, if you make it within the maximum allowable body fat percentage for your age, then you are good. If you don’t, your career could be adversely affected.
